comedy

It’s Launch Day! The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum is here!

Written by David McLain and illustrated by Felix Eddy, The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum is really a marvel. It’s our longest and biggest book yet, fully illustrated, and it somehow manages to dip it toes into every genre that we publish. It’s not just a time travel novel, it’s got elements of fantasy, science fiction, romance, adventure, and best of all, comedy. It’s an ambitious, far reaching tale that spans the history of time itself from somewhere in the ice age to San Tiempo, an island out of time.

We’ve created an ebook version, a paperback version, and a hardcover version of this book, so whichever is your preferred method of reading, I encourage you to pick this book up and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. coverimagettrm

About The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum:

“If you need to know men’s secrets

Or if there’s something you need to find

If you want to see the dinosaurs

Or the insides of your mind.

If you want to watch the earth begin,

Or see what the apocalypse will leave behind,

You need to thank Alice Anderson,

For Alice is the mother of time.”

That was how the rhyme went. Every time traveler knew it. Everyone that is, except of course, for Alice herself, since she hadn’t invented time travel yet. Since returning to London, Alice’s life has been turned upside down. She’s been accused of murder and lost her position in the scientific community. Her only ally in this journey is a strange man who seems to think that Alice may be about to open up a strange new world of possibilities, but is probably not telling her everything he knows.

Read an Excerpt:

xtra-somethingfortheback“Hello,” Alice said, with a certain degree of reluctant enthusiasm.

“You sound American,” an annoyed voice on the other end of the line said.

Alice dropped her bag. “I’ve been in New York for three years,” Alice said. “You’re lucky I don’t sound like I’m from the Bronx.”

It was Alice’s sister, Wendy, giving what by her standards was a remarkably warm and friendly greeting. “You’re lucky I don’t steal your passport while you’re here and force you to teach Electrical Engineering at the University of the Orkneys. Electrical Engineering, that’s what you do, isn’t it?”

“You do realize that I just spent an entire evening in a metal tube, sitting on a very small seat that appeared to have been made from rocks confiscated from terrorists at security?”

“Terrorists use rocks these days?”

“Well, they’re harder to spot going through metal detectors, aren’t they?”

Ending a sentence with a question apparently sounded appropriately British and Wendy seemed to ease up a little.

“How was the flight, then?” she asked.

“I believe I aged three years,” Alice answered, looking for the way to the exit. “Do you want to have a drink?”

“Is that a rhetorical question?”

“In America, it’s considered polite to ask.”

“I believe that the University of the Orkneys has early tenure.”

Wendy took pride in her absolute loathing of all things American. She saw Alice’s decampment to New York as nothing less than a complete betrayal.

“Would you mind if we met in at my hotel?” Alice asked, trying to sound as if this were a polite request and not a desperate plea.

“I don’t know,” Wendy said. “There aren’t going to be a lot of randy outer-space types there, are there?”

“It’s an astronomy conference,” Alice insisted. “Not a Sci-Fi convention.”

There was the unmistakable sound of pursing lips on the other end of the phone. “What hotel are you staying at?” Wendy asked.

“The Kensington.”

Wendy thought about it. “I’ll meet you, but let’s meet somewhere else. There’s a pub down that way that I’ve had my eye on.”

“Wendy–”

“I have to drive in all the way from Brixton. You can walk a hundred metres out of the hotel lobby.”

Alice sighed. She decided not to point out that in fact she had come quite a bit farther than hundred meters. “What’s the name of the place?” she asked.

“The Gristle and Thorn,” Wendy said.

Alice spotted the word “EXIT” on the far side of the hall. “Couldn’t find any place with a ghastlier name? Was the ‘Skull and Crossbones’ already booked?”

“Just meet me,” Wendy insisted, and for a moment, she did her best to sound kind. “I’ve missed you.”

It has been said that all journeys begin with a single step, and while it might seem that Alice’s journey began all the way back at JFK, in actuality the first step of Alice’s journey began with a decision. It was not a big decision, not the kind of thing that would strike a historian as a significant chapter in the decline and fall of the Western Empire, but for Alice Anderson, it was the equivalent of crossing the Rubicon. It was the simplest thing really – a choice of restaurants.

“The Gristle and Thorn it is,” Alice said, picking up her bag again and shuffling through the crowd.14731184_1306675979395903_3666018888957435109_n

14731184_1306675979395903_3666018888957435109_n It occurred to me that we never had an official cover reveal for this book, so we should probably do that now:

coverimagettrmLike the illustrations within, the cover is by Felix Eddy. If you’d like to see more of her art, you can visit her website here.

Here’s the back of the book:

“If you need to know men’s secrets
Or if there’s something you need to find
If you want to see the dinosaurs
Or the insides of your mind.
If you want to watch the earth begin,
Or see what the apocalypse will leave behind,

What I love about this book is that it’s got one foot in every ‘escapist’ genre. It has time travel, romance, adventure, science fiction, fantasy, comedy, steampunk… you name it.  This book has it all. Want to find out for yourself? Pre-order now, or check out the sample chapter available for FREE right here.

The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum is coming…

When I called David McLain to tell him I was accepting his manuscript for publication, the first words out of my mouth were, ‘This is going to be an ambitious project.’

And it is. The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum is going to be our longest and biggest book yet. It’s also illustrated by the very talented Felix Eddy, who has also done the cover. But the ‘ambitious’ aspect of this book goes much deeper than that. It just so happens that this book embodies every. single. genre. that we have an investment in. That’s right, it has time travel (obviously), science-fiction, fantasy, adventure, comedy and romance. It has not one time, or place, or version of reality, not two or three, but a multitude. It is masterfully done, and David McLain should be really proud. We know we are.

david-mclain.jpg.jpegSo, in honour of this very special book, we’re going to be offering it in both paperback and hardcover editions, as well as Ebook. This will be our first hardcover book, which is another thing to be excited about.

David McLain is also running an indiegogo campaign to help get The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum off the ground and if you donate, there are all sorts of perks, from pre-ordering your paperback or hardcover book right now, to getting an original piece of art from Felix Eddy herself. You are also incidentally entering a draw to win a handwritten copy of this massive novel, or to put it more cruelly, for the right to make David McLain cramp up his hand for good trying to write this book out for you.

Here’s the details: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-time-traveller-s-resort-and-museum#/

Obviously fake quotes made up by the author for the purpose of filling up space on the back of the book.

“The torch has been passed to a weird generation.”

John F Kennedy

“I remember the time David came over for drinks. ‘Twas the best of times, it ‘twas the worst of times.’ No, wait, it was just the worst of times. By the by, what exactly is ‘Tequila?’’”

Charles Dickens

“The first time I met David, he told me how much he liked my book. I said “Which one?” and he said “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” It sort of went downhill from there.”

Unintended: A Comedy of Errors

Uncover3There’s still three days left of the sale on our featured book for August! Go to our store and use the promo code: FEATURE at check out for $3.00 OFF the price of the ebook, making Unintended by Justine Alley Dowsett and Murandy Damodred only $0.99!

Kenzie en Shareed, daughter of the Northern Clan Chief, is sent south to the Kingdom of Ismera to uphold a treaty between the two lands by marrying the prince. Somehow she manages to marry the wrong man in this romantic comedy about good intentions and their unintentional consequences.

Here’s an excerpt:

Kenzie suddenly felt ill and more than a little dizzy. “You are not Prince Kadrean…?” The golden-haired stranger she’d just married wore a look of concern mixed with confusion. “Then who are you?”

“Uh…” He cleared his throat, made a little uncomfortable by the stares of the clanspeople. “Lord Garron D’Arbonne…at your service, Your Highness.”

An uncomfortable silence fell over them and the clansfolk, but Kenzie couldn’t find it in her to break it or fill it with anything meaningful. Her entire focus was on keeping herself from hyperventilating.

I just married this Garron D’Arbonne…not the Prince. Not my intended. Kenzie was in full panic at the gravity of the error she had just committed. How can I fix this?! The marriage bond is forever, never able to be undone. A man can remarry, under certain circumstances, but can a woman? Would they even allow such a thing?

My father will be so disappointed in me. He wanted this treaty between our lands to work. I’ve only just arrived and I’ve already ruined it. What am I going to do?!

“Well,” Garron cleared his throat again, “we should be going. I’m sure Prince Kadrean is eager to meet you.”

Gesturing forward, her husband held out his arm for her.

No, I mustn’t think of him that way, she admonished herself. He is my husband, but he’s right, I’m supposed to marry Prince Kadrean. There is a treaty. Our marriage is law. It must happen.

I’m so stupid. I could have avoided this if I had just thought to ask his name.

Her mentor had spent long hours making sure she understood the nuances of Ismeran culture, so Kenzie knew what was expected of her now. She slid her arm into Garron’s, even though she felt very conscious about doing so, and her people’s cheers resumed.

“What’s that all about?” Garron leaned into whisper to her, which didn’t help her self-consciousness.

“My people are happy for us,” she did her best to explain, “Most of them do not know English.”

“Oh,” he answered simply, considering this a moment. “I’m glad they approve…but what are they happy about, exactly? Pardon my questions, but I feel as if I’m missing something here.”

Garron took hold of the reins of his horse as they reached it, and with Seraphina leading both Kenzie’s horse and her own they were now reaching the open gates of the city, where it seemed that more people waited to greet them.

“They approve of our recent marriage…” Kenzie meant to say the words clearly and confidently, but they came out as a whisper instead.

Unfortunately, Garron heard her. “Our what?” he demanded as the roar of the crowd and the renewed fanfare swallowed them and there was no more time for words.

Justine Alley Dowsett (right) and Murandy Damored (left) are the co-writing duo behind Mirror’s Hope, Mirror’s Heart and now Unintended. Their next novel, Uncharted, is coming early 2017. In addition to writing novels, they’re inseparable sisters and the unstoppable force behind Mirror World Publishing.

What lies ahead…

Our featured book this month is Unintended by myself, Justine Alley Dowsett, and Murandy Damodred. This means, you can pick up the ebook edition of this book for only $0.99 in our store with the promotion code: FEATURE

I thought, in honour of Unintended being featured this month, that I would give you a sneak peek into what Murandy and I have been working on. Our next book is set in Ismera, the same world as Unintended, but it is not a sequel. It will feature entirely different characters with a story of their own, but will keep some of the style that you loved in Unintended. If you haven’t read Unintended yet, I suggest you do so, since it’s on sale this month!

Here’s the description of the upcoming Uncharted by Justine Alley Dowsett and Murandy Damodred:

There are no coincidences..

Fated to be a Priestess of Saegard, Meredith dreams of leading a normal life with a family and a home of her own, something she’ll never have if she swears her life to the Order.  A chance encounter with a stranger in the sacred Celestial Chamber sends her previously well-ordered life into a tailspin of adventure and mayhem as she is blamed for the theft of a legendary artifact. Now a fugitive, Meredith must join forces with Captain Reginald Lawrence, the son of the man who initially brought her to the Temple, and his enigmatic business partner,  the charming yet at times infuriating, Grey Rhodes, to find the Celestial Bowl and clear her name. From the cosmopolitan capital of Saegard to the coast of Ismera and back again, Meredith’s journey will reveal the true nature of her past, present, and ultimately, her future.

Uncharted is currently in the hands of our beta readers, but we expect the book will come out sometime early in 2017. We had a lot of fun writing this one and in my opinion it’s the perfect blend of romantic comedy and swashbuckling adventure. I guess we’ll see soon enough what the beta readers think of it.

Have you read Unintended? Are you looking forward to Uncharted? Let me know in the comments section below!

Thanks for reading!

August’s Feature is not your average love story. It’s four of them.

This month we’re featuring Unintended by myself, Justine Alley Dowsett, and my sister, Murandy Damodred. Which means, with the promotional code: FEATURE, you can get this book from our store for only $0.99. Or, if you’re a member, you can get it FOR FREE, along with all the rest of our books and some other cool perks. (Find out more about how this program works, here.)

Uncover3Unintended is a comedy of errors co-written by two authors who like to butt heads. It has influences from Shakespeare’s romantic comedies, from The Princess Bride, and believe it or not, from the love triangles common in Korean dramas (we went through a phase, okay?). Set in the fictional world of Ismera, which is part historical fiction, part fantasy, Unintended has four main characters, whose romantic stories intertwine in comedic and often disastrous ways.

Kenzie

As Murandy and I co-write, we tend to divide the protagonists between us. Mackenzie en Shareed, or Kenzie, is written by Murandy. As the daughter of the clan chief of Haldoram, Kenzie must travel south to the capital of Ismera to marry the prince in order to uphold a peace treaty between the two nations. Determined to marry on her own terms, Kenzie performs the marriage ritual immediately upon her arrival at the gates of Ismer, only to find out moments later that the man she’s just married isn’t the prince at all…

Garron

Garron D’Arbonne, written by me, is an Ismeran noble tied to the royal family by his engagement to the princess Margaret. He is sent down to the gates to act as escort for the prince’s arriving fiancee, only to find himself married to the strange, yet beautiful foreign woman before they even reach the palace.

Kadrean

Kadrean Authier, also written by me, is the Crown Prince of Ismer. He doesn’t think much of Kenzie, or their arranged marriage, especially not after their disastrous first meeting. Being who he is though, he knows he’s going to have to make the best of it, even if Kenzie seems to bring out the worst in him and he’d much rather spite his father by making Kenzie spurn him and return home.

Vivianne

Murandy wrote Vivianne, the headstrong, over-curious young lady cursed with visions of the future, who’s desperate to do whatever it takes to get away from her abusive family. Secretly in love with her father’s servant, she’s determined that her father won’t make her flirt with the prince, leaving that task to her sister, Victory, a pawn in her father’s plan to get the foreign princess out of the way so his family can rule Ismera once more.

All of our beta readers and fans agree that Unintended is our best co-authored book yet, so I hope you’ll use this opportunity to pick it up for $0.99 and give it a try. Lana is a high school senior enrolled in Vampire Education – a class to teach students about the very real presence of vampires in the world. Lana and her classmates don’t really expect to meet up with any undead bloodsuckers. Vampires are a lot like other scary things that supposedly exist but you hope you’ll never come across: nudist colonies, mad cow disease, and your parents’ sex life.

What is part of Lana’s everyday reality is navigating through one last year of high school while desperately trying to be less nerdy. She still loves spaceships, fantasy novels, and cat stickers, but she also recently got her braces removed, grew boobs, and is working on the makeup thing. She never expected her crush-of-a-lifetime Pete to even notice her – let alone ask her out on a date.

The date is going great until Pete’s ex-girlfriend Katy shows up, all bloody and pissed off. Lana quickly realizes that Katy is not just her ordinary bitchy self – she has been turned into a vampire taking Lana and Pete’s date from a steamy make-out session to an unexpected vampire hunting expedition!

Cover Reveal: This Night Sucks by Elizabeth J. M. Walker

First of all, if you haven’t read She Dreamed  of Dragons by Elizabeth J. M. Walker, you should. She Dreamed of Dragons is a young adult novel about a dragon mage learning to control her fire powers while participating in a royal tourney to discover the next heir to the throne of a magical kingdom. It is a sweet and magical coming of age story that readers of all ages can treasure.

This Night Sucks, also by Elizabeth J. M. Walker, is nothing like it. Launching June 17th!

Funny, irreverent, full of foul language and the humorous perspective of a ‘former nerd girl’ who just ‘grew boobs and is figuring out the whole make-up thing’, This Night Sucks, is a novella you don’t want to miss. Just as well written as Elizabeth’s first novel, it is also shocking, hilarious, and full of sass. I could go on about it, but I’ll just let you read the blurb for yourself:
