22 days left until Mirror World’s submission season begins again! We’ll be accepting submissions between October 1st and November 30th, 2021. So if you’re a writer and you would like to submit to us, this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. And yes, you could just check the submission guidelines on our website to learn everything you need to know, but if you’re wondering what sorts of manuscripts we’re REALLY looking for, then you’ve come to the right place. (Still do read the guidelines carefully though, following them closely is your best chance at getting your manuscript reviewed favourably.)
So what do we want this year?
Length wise, we want novels. While we’ll accept novellas of 25,000 words or more, what we REALLY want this year are novels between 75,000 and 120,000 words. Now that we’ve decided to run a contest for novellas and short stories every other year, we’re mostly getting our novella fix then, so we’re not as concerned about picking them up during our regular submissions period.
Target-market wise we want young adult and adult novels. We have a strong middle grade collection already and in the last few years we’ve really added to our children’s picture books, so it’s time to give our older audiences some books they’ll love. The sweet spot we’re looking for is the upper teen into new adult audience.
Genre wise, we want speculative fiction, science fiction, or fantasy with settings that are really interesting or unique. Of course we want a good story set within those worlds, but it’s time for us to showcase some really fantastic, different places. No more British Medieval fantasies or basic space operas… and no vampires, elves, or little green men.
In general we want something we can market. Give us a strong hook, an engaging opening and well-written blurb. Capture our imaginations and make us not only want to read your book, but publish it so we can share it with others.
Lastly, we’re being sticklers for the rules this year so if you want your submission reviewed please, please, please follow the guidelines and submit during our open submissions period. If you don’t send us what we ask for when we ask for it, we’re sorry but we’re not going to review your manuscript. We simply have too many to get through.
So head on over to our submission guidelines to find out if your manuscript is the right fit for Mirror World Publishing and get ready to send it along on October 1st.
Thanks for reading and good luck!
