Every year we prepare for submission season like we’re preparing for a storm. We clear our schedules, gather supplies and helpers, wrap up any projects we have on the go, and get ready for the flood of manuscripts to pour in. This year was no exception.
What was different about this year, however, was the sheer volume of queries we received. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that because of the pandemic, some people have more time to write/edit/submit and generally work on creative goals and also that people are more in need of an escape than ever and writing provides that. ( So does reading our books, but I digress…)
Whatever the reason, the numbers have been unprecedented and though our entire team looks forward to submission season each year, I’l sure we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief when we can be assured that no more will be added to the pile that still remains to be reviewed. And yes, there’s still quite a pile. I have a feeling we will be reading submissions well into February at this point, though I am pleased to report that at this point we are still on schedule as far as our deadlines go, so at least we’ve managed to somehow keep on top of everything!
Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not complaining. We really do love receiving submissions and getting the chance to connect with authors and give them what feedback we can to help them on their individual publishing journeys. That’s very important to us and it’s one of the reasons we do what we do. In celebration of that, some of our authors have even been kind enough to share their publishing journeys here on this blog which you can find here:
All that being said, we can really only keep up this frantic pace for so long each year before we have to return our attention to the editing, formatting, cover designing, publishing, and marketing parts of our jobs. So this is officially our last call for you to get your submission packages to us. You have until December 24th, 2020 at midnight to do so. After that, you will have to wait until next November, or look out for our next short story contest which we hope to host in the summer.
Thanks for reading, writing, and entrusting us with your precious creations.
