It’s no secret that this year has sucked in general. For us, it’s been a year of reduced sales and a year where we’ve greatly missed all the fun events we used to take part in. We’ve been lucky to be able to transition a few of these to take place online, but it just hasn’t been the same. I miss getting out there and connecting with authors and readers and I can’t say that I’m enjoying the constant stress and the reduced options for ways to cope with it.
I want to remind everyone that providing an escape is what we do. It’s what we’re here for. So if you’re looking for a little fun and adventure or just a way to visit a different world for a while, then we’ve got you covered. You can check out our ever-growing collection in our online store (ps, we deliver for free locally in Windsor-Essex with the code: WEDELIVER). And don’t forget, books make great gifts too!
Okay, with that out of the way, here’s where we are right now:
As you no doubt are aware, our annual submission period opened November 1st and it closes again on Dec 24th at midnight. And though we’re not done yet, I have to say this year has brought us BY FAR the most submissions we have ever seen! I don’t know if this is because more people are writing during lockdown or if we’re becoming more well known, but either way we are up to our ears in manuscripts and our four-person team is doing all they can to keep up. So if you are waiting on a response from us, it is coming, but we ask that you please be patient and understanding!
In addition to submission season, December is also one of the months that we calculate and pay out royalties to our authors. (Like we’re not already busy enough this time of year, right?) We’re pleased to be able to congratulate Regan W.H. Macaulay, Kevin Risk, and Gordon Bagshaw, the team behind Libby the Lobivia Jajoiana, for having sold the most copies this royalty period! If you haven’t yet checked out our newest children’s book, Libby the Lobivia Jajoiana I suggest you do. The art is fantastic, the storytelling is fantastic and it has some great themes and messages. If you would like to learn more about it, or order a copy for yourself or a loved one, you can do so here.
You may remember that back in the summer we ran our very first Short Story/Novella Anthology Contest. Our winning stories were announced in the fall, here. Well, we’ve had to pause the edits of these seven stories to focus on submissions, but we intend to get back to them as soon as possible in preparation for this book’s eventual release in the summer of 2021.
Speaking of 2021, we’ve got some great books coming up, as always. You’ll be hearing more about them, in detail, as we move into the new year, but I can give you a quick sneak peek now:
First up will be the second instalment of the Nora Simeon Investigation series by Laurence Raphael Brothers. We started this series earlier this year and it’s a curious and wonderful blend of occult investigation and romance featuring a bad ass hero who gets things done. The Demons of the Square Mile is coming out in either February or March.
In the spring, we’ll be re-releasing the new and improved Lands of Jade by myself, J.A. Dowsett. Lands of Jade is the second in the young adult scifi/fantasy Crimson Winter Trilogy. Yukari and her friends are back, this time ready to protect the Kingdom of Taiyou from the Vile Emperor and his Deathsquads only to learn that there may be an even bigger threat on the horizon.
Summer will see the release of our much-anticipated Far, Far Away Anthology, featuring seven stories set in seven realms of science fiction and fantasy. And then we’ve got a children’s book called Tabitha Won’t Sleep coming from the talented husband and wife duo; David McLain and Felix Eddy, whom you will know from his novel The Time Traveller’s Resort and Museum and her art book, A Bestiary Alphabet.
Next, Mirror World superstar Sharon Ledwith is back with the third book in her popular series for tweens, The Last Timekeepers. So far the Timekeepers have been to Atlantis, Sherwood Forest, and Amsterdam in WWII. Subscribe to this blog, or our newsletter to find out where this ragtag band of merry time travellers will head next in The Last Timekeepers and the Noble Slave.
Last, but not least, we have yet another tale of imagination from Regan W.H. Macaulay and Alex Zgud; Sloth the Lazy Dragon. This children’s picture book is full of adorable artwork and important messages about the value of getting fit and staying healthy and will be the perfect gift for next year’s holiday season!
That’s all for now, and thank you for reading. Don’t forget to check out our online store for some great escapism fiction this holiday season and we hope to get out and see you all in 2021!
